Wahine
Probably the worst storm in living memory beset Wellington on 10th April 1968. Many stories have been written and are told of the heroic actions of professional and voluntary personnel who toiled on land as well as on the sea to save life and property.
The greatest single tragedy was the sinking of the inter-island ferry Wahine, just a short distance from Fort Dorset with the loss of 53 lives. Wahine Day will be etched on the memory of those who became involved in assisting the survivors to safety.

A descriptive and photographic history of the vessel and the disaster is maintained by the NZ National Maritime Museum.
